FireSmart Update

FireSmart Jasper logo

Logs removal will take place overnight (starting at 1:00am) on Thursday, March 28 and Friday, March 29. Parking restrictions will be in place around Stone Mountain and S-Block. Keep an eye out for signage!

Unseasonably warm temperatures are affecting the window for burning debris safely. The Landmark crew is lighting piles early in the morning while temperatures are still below freezing, which also allows for more active monitoring throughout the day. Work is ongoing around the off leash area and along the road between Old Fort Point and Lake Beauvert. Conditions permitting, work will then continue around the Waste Water Treatment Plant.

The trail system may be affected temporarily. Please keep an eye out for crews at work and follow all warnings and closures.

The Municipality of Jasper has contracted Landmark Solutions from Salmon Arm to complete FireSmart work around Jasper to increase our community’s resilience in the event of a wildfire. The work began in late 2018 and will continue into the spring, as site conditions allow. This project builds on last year’s fuel management units (download FMUs map).

Led by Fire Chief Greg Van Tighem and developed in collaboration with Alan Westhaver of ForestWise Environmental Consulting Ltd., the 2019 municipal FireSmart project focuses on thinning the forest around evacuation routes and critical infrastructure.

The project is made possible by grant funding from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA), and through collaboration and additional contributions (financial and in kind) from Parks Canada, who provides Field Surveillance Officers for the project. Other partners include ATCO, CN and Kinder Morgan.
