Welcoming Week

September 9-18th, 2022

Welcoming Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate diversity in our community.  

Welcoming Week has been celebrated globally for 10 years and in Canada for 3 years. The Jasper Local Immigration Partnership is proud to bring events to Jasper.

Welcoming places have intentional, inclusive policies, practices, and norms. Welcoming places enable all residents to live, thrive, and contribute fully. 

JLIP members have been working to organize a series of events and activities for the week. Our goal is to promote understanding and celebrate diversity.

Update on Welcoming Week Activities

Many of our planned Welcoming Week activities were postponed, due to the Chetamon Wildfire and town wide power outage. We appreciate your patience as we reschedule events. We have a group of committed volunteers and staff that is looking forward to putting on events and we’re excited to host you!

Welcoming Week Proclamation

Mayor and Council declared Sept 9-18 Welcoming Week in Jasper, signing a declaration at the Sept 6 Council Meeting. See more about the declaration here.



World Soccer Cup

Jasper youth participated in a 2 week soccer skills camp, led by Coach Dmytro, here from the Ukraine. All enrollment fees were donated to a Ukrainian maternity hospital in Dmytro’s hometown. The kids had a great time and the final game saw Ukraine beat Canada in a close competition!




Community Connections

Community Futures West Yellowhead (CFWY) supports newcomer business entrepreneurs and will be at Robson House (409 Patricia St. Jasper AB) on October 5th from 10-2.  If you are interested in chatting with someone from CFWY, finding out about their programs and how they can support you in entrepreneurship drop in to Robson house on the 5th to chat with a CFWY representative or call 780-865-1224 to book some time. 

Immigrant Entrepreneur Award

The Municipality of Jasper and Jasper Local Immigration Partnership is happy to be sponsoring this new award at the annual Jasper Chamber Awards Gala. Nominate an outstanding immigrant owned business in our community until October 10th, 2022 here.

Cultural Kitchen 

To be rescheduled – watch this page and our social media for updates. We’re bringing back our hugely successful Cultural kitchens! Local Chef Ivan will be hosting a cooking class, sharing a traditional recipe from Central America.   

Newcomer Town Tour

To be rescheduled - watch this page and our social media for updates. A tour of Jasper, showcasing service providers and ‘places to know about’ with Danel and Safaa from Settlement Services. 

Learning Sessions

To be rescheduled – watch this page and our social media for updates. Canadian Culture at Your Workplace Global Recruitment for Employers Join JEEC at one of these learning sessions, online and in person options will be available. 

Indigenous Tea Experience

To be rescheduled – watch this page and our social media for updates. Indigenous Tea Experience “Tawaw Nihty” Tawaw, loosely meaning “Welcome” and “Nihty” the Cree word for Tea. Medicinal, herbal, organic, this experience is a time honored way of sitting with plant relatives, meditation, and healing. Honoring the water teachings that have been with the Nehiyawak forever. Matricia Brown (Warrior Women) will host morning and evening tea experiences. 



Storytime Around the World

On Saturday September 17th we gathered to hear cultural stories from Jasper residents.  A huge THANK YOU to storytellers Laurisa, Danel, Michelle, Marco, Kharisma and Traudi! We heard an Indigenous story, stories from South Africa, Guatemala, Mexico and the Philippines and finished up the event with a game from Germany.  We had such a good time we want to host another Cultural Storytime in the winter!
