What is FireSmart?

FireSmart helps communities located in forested areas to reduce the risk of wildfire to homes and neighbourhoods. It also helps property owners and communities understand the wildfire risk and how to make homes more resilient to fire. The combination of community-wide fuel reduction and backyard-level FireSmart work is our community's best defense against wildfires.

An estimated 90% of homes damaged or destroyed by wildfire are ignited by embers. By taking proactive FireSmart measures around your property, you can increase your property's resistance to wildfire.

Visit the FireSmart Canada website for more details on how you can help protect your home from a wildfire.

Introducing Jasper’s Residential FireSmart Sprinkler Protection Program

As part of our continued efforts to support recovery and resilience, the Jasper Fire Department is launching a new Residential FireSmart Sprinkler Protection Program. Learn more about this new program in the accordion below.

As part of our continued efforts to support recovery and resilience, the Jasper Fire Department is running a Residential FireSmart Sprinkler Protection Program. This initiative offers eligible homeowners the opportunity to purchase a rooftop sprinkler kit at a discounted rate.

To qualify for the roof top sprinkler kit at a discounted rate, residents must complete a FireSmart Home Hazard Assessment with the Jasper Fire Department. Complete this form to register and a Fire Department staff member will contact you to set up an assessment. Please note that Home Assessment appointments are subject to last minute changes if the Fire Department is called to respond to an emergency.

The Fire Department does not have B+T Wildfire kits in stock, but they can be ordered in upon request.

Will the Fire Department help with installing my sprinkler?

The Sprinkler Kits are designed to be easy to install. We encourage you to try and install the sprinklers yourself, however, if you require assistance, please reach out to the Fire Department.

What is a FireSmart Home Assessment?

A trained member of the Fire Department will meet you at your property to complete a FireSmart Home Assessment. They will walk through your outdoor space and inspect the exterior of any structures. After the assessment, you will receive a report with recommendations to help improve your property’s resilience to wildfire.

The FireSmart Home Ignition Zone is the area within 30 meters from your property. It is made up of three priority areas:
✔️ the Immediate Zone,
✔️ the Intermediate Zone and
✔️ the Extended Zone.

In Jasper, changes within 10 meters of your home will have the biggest impact on your wildfire resilience. In town, this zone also overlaps with your neighbours.
Working in the Immediate Zone and working your way outward is the best approach. Everything within 0 meters to 1.5 meters of your home should be non-combustible.

The most common issues in this zone are having the following items right next to your house:
🔥 coniferous shrubs like juniper or cedar
🔥 wood piles
🔥 general yard items like kids' toys or patio furniture
🔥 recreational equipment or tires

The Immediate Zone also includes your house itself, the roof, gutters, vents, decks, and any fences that attach directly to your house.
