FireSmart

An estimated 90% of homes damaged or destroyed by wildfire are ignited by embers. By taking proactive FireSmart measures around your property, you can increase your property's resistance to wildfire.

Community-Wide FireSmart Day

Saturday, May 10

Pick-up will take place on Sunday, May 11. Please have everything out in the parking lane or designated high-density areas by 12:00pm on Sunday, May 11.

How to Get Involved

🔥 Review the FireSmart Begins at Home guide to learn easy FireSmart tips & tricks.

🔥 Grab paper yard waste bags from the Jasper Activity Centre.

🔥 Please place items for pick-up in the parking lane in front of your home, or one of the designated high-density pick up areas. Back alleys will NOT be picked up. See below map for details.

🔥 Ensure yard waste is placed in paper bags. Yard waste in plastic bags won't be picked-up. Larger items such as sticks and branches can be placed directly in the parking lanes or designated high-density pick up areas.

Please place items for pick-up in the parking lanes. Higher density areas (Stone Mountain, Mountain Park Co-ops, etc.) will have designated pick-up locations, please refer to the below map for the locations.

What is FireSmart?

FireSmart helps communities located in forested areas to reduce the risk of wildfire to homes and neighbourhoods. It also helps property owners and communities understand the wildfire risk and how to make homes more resilient to fire. The combination of community-wide fuel reduction and backyard-level FireSmart work is our community's best defense against wildfires.

Visit the FireSmart Canada website for more details on how you can help protect your home from a wildfire.
The FireSmart Home Ignition Zone is the area within 30 meters from your property. It is made up of three priority areas:
✔️ the Immediate Zone,
✔️ the Intermediate Zone and
✔️ the Extended Zone.

In Jasper, changes within 10 meters of your home will have the biggest impact on your wildfire resilience. In town, this zone also overlaps with your neighbours.
Working in the Immediate Zone and working your way outward is the best approach. Everything within 0 meters to 1.5 meters of your home should be non-combustible.

The most common issues in this zone are having the following items right next to your house:
🔥 coniferous shrubs like juniper or cedar
🔥 wood piles
🔥 general yard items like kids' toys or patio furniture
🔥 recreational equipment or tires

The Immediate Zone also includes your house itself, the roof, gutters, vents, decks, and any fences that attach directly to your house.
