How Snow Removal & Sanding Are Prioritized in Jasper
Winter is here, and our Municipal crews are out keeping roads safe and passable. Here’s how snow removal and sanding are prioritized across town so you know what to expect after a snowfall.
Snow Removal
• Priority 1 – Emergency Routes: Cleared first to ensure emergency vehicles can move safely at all times.
• Priority 2 – Emergency Routes & Central Business District: Key connector roads and the downtown core are cleared next, using the same standard—plowing at 100 mm of snowfall, with additional work as needed to keep routes open.
• Priority Parking Areas: Essential municipal parking areas (Emergency Services Building, Operations, Activity Centre) are kept accessible at all times.
• Major Traffic Routes: Addressed once Priority 1 and 2 routes are complete.
• Public Parking Lots: Cleared within 14 days following 150 mm of snowfall.
• Remaining Roads & Streets: Neighbourhood roads and streets are cleared within 21 days following 150 mm of snowfall.
• Alleys: Business alleys are maintained to remain passable. Residential alleys have no set standard but may receive attention as conditions allow.
Sanding
Sanding focuses on areas with the highest traffic and pedestrian activity:
• Emergency routes, downtown business district & school-zone roads.
• Intersections and crosswalks.
• Priority parking areas
• Remaining roads as needed to maintain safe conditions
During Major Storms
In severe weather, crews may not be able to meet standards immediately. Work continues as soon as conditions allow.
How Residents Can Help
Winter conditions can change quickly. Residents play an important role in keeping roads and sidewalks safe:
• Adjust driving speed to conditions and use proper winter tires.
• Wear appropriate winter footwear and use extra caution at crossings.
• Respect parking signage to avoid snow-removal delays.
• Give crews space to work, use alternate routes when possible, wait to be waved through, and step aside or cross the road when equipment is approaching.
• Keep snow from your property off roads and alleys. If you need extra space, you may request permission to use the parking lane in front of your property.
• Maintain the sidewalks adjacent to your property as required under municipal bylaw.
• Report issues or concerns so crews can respond quickly.
If you have questions or see an urgent issue, please contact Operations by filling out a feedback form on our website (https://www.jasper-alberta.ca/p/e-service), or calling 7808-852-3040
