Activity Centre:

To complete the switch to a new electrical panel, the Activity Centre will be closed from Saturday, December 14, at 6:00 PM to Monday, December 16, at 8:00 AM. This temporary closure is necessary to finalize key electrical upgrades that are part of the renovation.

The main entrance on Bonhomme Street and the lobby will re-open on Wednesday, December 18^th.

Update #65 – December 6, 2024  

There will be a lot of activity in all areas of the renovation project over the next few weeks. All users can expect some construction happening when accessing the facilities the next few weeks.

Activity Centre:

To complete the switch to a new electrical panel, the Activity Centre will be closed from Saturday, December 14, at 6:00 PM to Monday, December 16, at 8:00 AM. This temporary closure is necessary to finalize key electrical upgrades that are part of the renovation.

As we move closer to completing the lobby area, the beautiful mural by local artist Jennifer Ottaway will be removed next week. We would like to thank Jennifer for her contribution, which made the space more welcoming and visually appealing. 

Arena Update:

Free public skating at various times on Sunday, December 8, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. On Monday, December 9, Jasper Minor Sports will begin their practices in Jasper. Access to dressing room 5 will be available starting December 8, with the five new dressing rooms still on track to be ready for December 18.

The repair work to the pool’s basin coating is completed. Over the next 3 weeks additional steps will be completed to ensure the facility meets safety and quality standards.

• Two rounds of regulatory water testing, conducted at least one week apart
• Staff recertification and testing

We are excited to announce that a soft opening for public skating is planned for December 8. Minor sports will also have ice time available during the week of December 9–12.

Access to dressing room 5 will be available starting December 8, with five new dressing rooms available starting December 18.

Arena Users Update: 

• Contractors arrived in Jasper Tuesday afternoon and started the ice plant, beginning the slab cooling process.
• Our operators began flooding the surface today (Friday), a process that typically takes about 10 days to complete.
• After the ice is finished, additional work will be done to ensure the arena is safe and ready for play, which may take up to a week. 
• While ice making is underway, we will continue to complete the board and player-box improvement project.  

With the above timeline, we expect the arena ice will be ready for use the week of December 16^th, with dressing rooms to follow. 

Delays in contractor availability have been a significant challenge, but we are doing everything possible to expedite this process while maintaining safety and quality standards.

A contractor has been hired to repair the pool’s basin coating, and work began on Wednesday, November 13th. The projected opening date for the second week of December remains unchanged. 

Arena Update 

• Carlson Construction continues to be on target to turn over all dressing rooms and off-ice areas to us by the third week of December. 
• On November 1^st, we successfully started up the ice plant and ice making has begun for the curling rink.  
• The rink board and player box improvement project is ongoing. 
• We expect to be able to begin ice making in the arena late next week as previously announced.

Jasper Recreation Facilities Renovation Project Timeline: 

All timelines remain unchanged from last week.

1. Arena: 

• Rink Board Modification: Projected for completion in early November.
• Ice-Making Plant Start-up: November 1st.
• Curling Ice: Projected second week of November.
• Arena Ice: Projected third week of November.
• Dressing Rooms: Projected third week of December. 

*Rink Board Modification: This project requires highly specialized skills and training, which made it difficult to secure the right contractors. Originally, a team of six employees from a contractor based in Hinton, was scheduled for the work in August. However, the wildfire and evacuation led to significant delays. Despite their other commitments, Quadra has gone above and beyond to adjust to our new timeline, working with a smaller crew of 2-3 as their availability allows. They have confirmed that there are no alternatives to accelerate the project further, as the work needs to be completed consecutively. The work is on track to be completed in time for us to clean the arena and begin ice-making by mid-November, which is the best outcome we could have hoped for given the circumstances.*  

2. Aquatic Centre & Changerooms:

• Pool: Projected the second week of December.
  • Due to wildfire-related delays and the subsequent cleanup, the pool’s basin coating sustained damage. This coating is essential for safe and successful operation, so we are prioritizing immediate repairs. These repairs will add a 2 to 3 week delay to the previous projected date, pending contractor confirmation.
  • Projected dates are dependent on a successful start-up process, including filling the pool, testing for leaks, starting up mechanical systems, making any necessary repairs, and obtaining Public Health approval.
• Changerooms: Projected the second week of November.

3. Curling Rink & Lounge:

• Curling Rink: Projected second week of November.
• Curling Lounge: Projected first week of December. 

4. Bonhomme Street:

• Reopening: Projected for November 4th.

Bonhomme Street Road Closure

Starting Monday, October 21^st Bonhomme Street will be closed in front of the Jasper Activity Centre & Arena and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. The closure is anticipated to last until Monday, November 4^th. 

The sidewalk on Bonhomme Street from Elm Street to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre, Museum, Catholic Church, and the parking lot/ recycling depot will remain open during the closure, as well as access from the parking lot to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre. Detour signage will be posted in the area, and the main parking lot and recycling centre will be accessible via the West entrance/exit.

This closure is necessary to accommodate gravel installation, compaction testing,  saw cutting, and laying asphalt.

Aquatic Centre Update: 

Contractors hired by our insurance company are actively working on cleaning and remediation in the Aquatic Centre, which includes scaffolding that is set up to reach high areas. The timeline for this work to be complete is uncertain at this time. 

Once we gain access to the pool, our team at the Fitness & Aquatic Centre will need approximately three weeks to complete the necessary work, including filling and testing the pool. 

If any unforeseen damage is discovered, such as from the scaffolding itself, this could extend the timeline further. While we are hopeful for a reopening date in 2024, this will depend on how these factors unfold. We understand the importance of the Aquatic Centre, and will continue to prioritize its opening, and provide updates when we have them.

The reopening of the Aquatic Centre, initially expected at the end of June, will be delayed due to unforeseen supply chain issues with the partition panels for changing spaces and showers. These panels are now expected to arrive in mid-August. 

We understand the frustration and disappointment this delay may cause for our community members eagerly awaiting the reopening of the aquatic centre.

The Municipality is actively working with our suppliers and construction partners to expedite the process and explore all possible solutions to proceed sooner and open the facility by the end of July. Overall, the whole renovation project is still expected to be completed in Q3. 

We are also working with the project team to explore creative ways that may allow us to provide some level of service to the community during this additional short delay.

In the meantime, we are taking advantage of the downtime to perform necessary maintenance, such as replacing pool tank expansion joint gaskets and removing flaking paint from ducting in the pool area. We will continue to provide regular updates every Friday and we thank Jasperites for their understanding and patience.

Painting: Walls and ceilings will be painted throughout the week with epoxy, which requires 48 hours to ensure any odors dissipate.

Power Upgrade: An essential ATCO power upgrade will be conducted to enhance our facilities.

Beginning Monday, April 29, Bonhomme Street will be closed in front of the Jasper Activity Centre & Arena and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. 

The sidewalk on Bonhomme Street from Elm Street to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre, Museum, Catholic Church, and the parking lot/ recycling depot will remain open during the closure, as well as access from the parking lot to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre. 

Detour signage will be posted in the area, and the main parking lot and recycling centre will be accessible via the West entrance/exit.

This closure is necessary to accommodate hydrant installation work, and is anticipated to last until May 2nd.

The Jasper Recreation Facilities Renovation Project continues to be on track to finish within budget in Q3 0f 2024 as anticipated.

The staged re-opening of the Aquatic Centre will not start in Q1 of 2024 as anticipated. Previously unknown site conditions that required extensive hazardous materials removal, and significant re-design have affected the Aquatic Centre construction timeline. The Aquatic Centre is now anticipated to open in mid-Q 2 of 2024. We know that residents are eager to get back into the Aquatic Centre, and we apologize for this unanticipated extended closure.

The Activity Centre basement and upper Curling Lounge will not re-open in Q2 of 2024 as anticipated due to site conditions related to the elevator placement and existing building structure constraints. The anticipated competition date for these areas has been extended to Q3.

Beginning Sunday, December 3^rd, Bonhomme Street will be closed in front of the Jasper Activity Centre & Arena and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. 

The sidewalk on Bonhomme Street from Elm Street to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre, Museum, Catholic Church, and the parking lot/ recycling depot will remain open during the closure, as well as access from the parking lot to the Fitness & Aquatic Centre. Detour signage will be posted in the area, and the main parking lot and recycling centre will be accessible via the West entrance/exit.

This closure is necessary to accommodate steel installation work, and is anticipated to last until December 16^th.

The temporary external Arena dressing rooms arrived in Jasper today. These temporary dressing rooms are two 60-foot modular buildings, and will have two 12 foot by 30 foot rooms in each, for a total of four temporary dressing rooms. These modular buildings have been placed beside the Arena on Pyramid Lake Road. 

Tourism Jasper and the Municipality of Jasper will be completing the required permitting, and other requirements to make these temporary dressing rooms operational over the coming weeks, and ready for tournaments and league games in December. 

We look forward to having this increased level of service during the renovation project, and we would like to thank Tourism Jasper for their efforts in making this a possibility.

With recreation activities returning to the Jasper Activity Centre, there has been an increase in traffic in the Commemoration Park parking lot. 

To make the parking lot safer and more accessible for community members accessing the facility daily, we are making some changes to the parking time limits in this lot.  

The parking stalls directly next to the Activity Centre in the Commemoration Park parking lot will become 15-minute only parking. Signage will be put up in the coming weeks and this will be enforced during peak times.   

We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that there is access to the Jasper Arena from Pyramid Lake Rd, and the parking lot on Bonhomme Street on the other side of the Recreation Facility is available for longer term parking.

• Electricians were on-site disconnecting any electrical required for demolition, and reviewing the site for upcoming electrical work that will be required. 
• Demolition subcontractors removed two exterior canopies on the arena, and the reception desk. 
• Removal of all concrete sidewalks and asphalt in the fenced off area.
• Survey layout conducted to determine location of site services and new foundations. 
• Private locates determined where underground utility lines are located. 
• Beginning stages of site services installation: water supply and distribution services, and sanitary sewer collection. 
• Ice plant testing.

• Starting asbestos abatement work which includes a set of procedures specifically designed to control the release of asbestos fibers from asbestos-containing materials that are located in the Jasper Activity Centre.

Carlson Construction crews were on-site early Monday morning, kicking off the Jasper Recreation Facilities Renovation project. 

Here’s what happened this week:

• Bonhomme Street entrance/exit was closed and fenced off, and a temporary entrance/exit is at the Commemoration Park doors. 
• Wildflowers Childcare received a new, temporary entrance to ensure safe access throughout construction.
• Diggers were on-site, and all of the old rubber mats and general main entrance area has been removed.
• The new ice plant received sod, making this part of the renovation complete.

Plans for next week:

• Electricians will be on-site disconnecting any electrical required for demolition, and to review the site for upcoming electrical work that will be required. 
• Demolition subcontractors will  be on-site, removing two exterior canopies on the arena, and the reception desk. 
• Finish the removal of all concrete sidewalks and asphalt in the fenced off area.
• Survey layout will be conducted to determine location of site services and new foundations. 
• Private locates will determine where underground utility lines are located. 
• Starting the installation of site services: water supply and distribution services, and sanitary sewer collection. 
• Ice plant testing. 

Residents in the area and visitors at the Jasper Activity Centre can expect lots of construction activity, which will be loud at times. 

We anticipate that next weeks update will provide a construction schedule for the next few months. 

 We are and will continue to actively work on prioritizing access for local youth, maintaining safety, and engagement with stakeholders throughout the construction phase.

We’re excited to announce that construction for the Jasper Recreation Facilities Renovation Project will begin starting on Monday, July 17^th. 

The project will enter a significant milestone as the contractor, Carlson Construction, will begin demolition work, marking an important step towards revitalizing the Activity Centre, Arena, and Fitness & Aquatic Centre facilities. 

Starting Monday, July 17^th the Bonhomme Street entrance/exit (west) will be closed to ensure the safety of residents, staff, and workers in the area.  

• Parents, guests, and users of these facilities are kindly requested to use the Commemoration Park (east) entrance/exit to ensure continued access to the Activity Centre and Wildflowers Childcare facility. Signage and guidance will be in place to assist with the new access route, ensuring a smooth transition for all users.  

• The Activity Centre Front Desk has been relocated to the old registry office, and signs are in place.   

• Glenda’s Concession will remain open throughout the construction phase. 

• East parking lot (Commemoration Park) : 
  • Municipal staff have been asked to park in the large parking lot on Bonhomme, or on the street.
  • Additional bike racks have been installed to ensure we have adequate space for those that are biking. 
  • We would like to remind people to stay safe and vigilant in the parking lot due to the increase in usage. 

The full closure of the Bonhomme Street (west) entrance/exit is necessary to facilitate the demolition process and prepare the site for the exciting improvements to come. We expect the closure to be in place from July to November.
