Licences 

Business Licence

Business licence information, as well as resources on how to start and support your business, can be found on the Doing Business in Jasper page.  

Busking Licence

Busking is allowed in select locations within the townsite. All information about busking in Jasper can be found on the Habitat for the Arts website.  

Pet Licence

Pet licence information, as well as questions and information about owning a pet in Jasper, can be found on the Pets in Jasper page. 

Permits

Please read activity and permit details carefully. Activities may require more than one permit application and extra documentation. Some activities may also require permits from Parks Canada.  

Which permits and/or approvals will you need?

Using public space and obstructing the normal use of the street or public area for construction and building activities, including: 
  • Closing a road, lane, parking stall or sidewalk  
  • Parking any business or construction-related vehicle for longer than the posted limit  
  • Stationing a mobile crane or construction machinery on the street 
  • Loading or unloading construction material*, machinery, or equipment on the street 
  • Placing a construction waste bin on the street 
  • Erecting scaffolding on the sidewalk 
  • Excavating in a public space  
* Storage of organic materials (e.g. soil, rocks) is not permitted through the Street and Public Space Use permit program. Organic material should be stored on private land only.

Fireworks 
  • Using, selling or purchasing fireworks, or any other type of explosive, is not permitted within Jasper National Park

Drones 
  • Taking off or landing a drone for recreational use is prohibited within Jasper National Park 
  • Flying a drone may be considered for commercial purposes and will require a Restricted Activity Permit from Parks Canada before applying for Municipal permits. See Parks Canada Drones or unmanned air vehicles (UAV) page for more information.

  • Driving a non-standard vehicle (including but not limited to having metal lugs and caterpillar tracks) 
  • Transporting a building 
  • Hauling a large or overweight load 
Prohibited Vehicle Permit Application 
  • Connecting to municipal utility services (water and sewage)  
  • Connecting an RV to municipal utility services on a lot in town (available for rebuild projects only) 
Undertaking any building construction, renovation or demolition project over $5,000  Fire Safety Plan 

Event Permits are required for special events, such as parades, farmers markets, and community events.

Application Form and Timeline 

The completed Event Permit Application (PDF) and supporting documents can be submitted by email to townplanning@jasper-alberta.ca. Your application must be received at least sixty (60) days prior to your event start date. 

Permit Fees 

Permit fees have been established by the Municipal Council through both Bylaw #260: Rules and Fees Bylaw 2024 and a refined public-space fee structure designed to support rebuild (the decision and supporting details can be found in the official agenda and minutes of Committee of the Whole meeting of May 13, 2025).  

Applicable fees will be provided to you in the form of an invoice(s) that must be paid prior to permit validation.

  • Jasper charitable and not-for-profit organizations 
  • Any other application deemed by the CAO or his designate to be exempt

Filming Permits are required only if you want to use public space and obstruct the normal use of the street or public area.  

Commercial filming on streets, sidewalks or parking lots: 

  • Complete the Filming Permit Application below for projects that will obstruct the normal use of the street or public area. 
  • No permit needed for small filming projects that do not obstruct public space.
